Hi, I'm Bex

Here's a bit more about me, my background and the story behind Positively Together.  If you have any questions or want to know more please shoot me an email! I'd love to hear from you.

I live on a small farm in Western Bay of Plenty, New Zealand with my animals, my son and my husband (that was not written in order of preference!).

If you've explored the website already, you'll already know we get up to quite a variety of activities here - dog training classes, horsemanship clinics around NZ and internationally, youth animal training workshops, private behaviour consults, an online learning community and a travelling animal entertainment show.

Experience & credentials
I have been fortunate enough to learn in person from some of the world's best trainers, including the incredible Dr Susan FriedmanKen RamirezDr Bob BaileyKay Laurence  Shawna Karrasch, Mary ConcannonSteve WhitePeta ClarkeAlexandra KurlandPeggy HoganEva Bertilsson and more.   Over 20 years in and the learning never stops!  I am proud to have passed the rigorous testing process to be certified with Karen Pryor Academy as a KPA Certified Training Partner.

I have travelled to teach horse clinics in Texas, USA; across Australia from Queensland to Perth to NSW; and all around New Zealand.  Since 2019 I have been teaching clients online, both privately and through my learning community Positively Us.  Since 2017 I have been a regular clinician, educator and performer at Equidays / Equifest, New Zealand's largest equestrian festival. In addition, I regularly present to crowds like Auckland Pet Expo and local Bay of Plenty community events to talk about dog training, behaviour and safety, and provide hands-on workshops.

Lifelong learning

I have been fortunate enough to learn in person from some of the world's best positive reinforcement trainers, including the incredible Dr Susan Friedman, Ken Ramirez, Dr Bob BaileyKay Laurence  Shawna Karrasch, Mary Concannon, Steve WhitePeta Clarke, Alexandra KurlandPeggy HoganEva Bertilsson and more. Over 20 years in and the learning never stops! I am proud to have passed the rigorous testing process to be certified with Karen Pryor Academy as a KPA Certified Training Partner.

My origin story

I first learned about science-based positive reinforcement animal training in 2001 and quickly became obsessed with learning everything I could about the science and the art of training and behaviour, and particularly the use of clicker training / positive reinforcement with dogs and horses. I originally trained as a vet nurse in my early twenties, not because I wanted to vet nurse but because there really weren't any other options at that time for people interested in training and behaviour. I went on to work with Guide Dogs and then as a NZ Customs drug detector dog handler. I learned a lot there, but the environment was high pressure, and I craved the freedom to explore different training methods and non-traditional techniques. (Find out more about my journey and training philosophy here in blog form, or listen to a podcast interview).

I eventually moved on from the detector dog unit and spent eight years working in senior intelligence roles in government law enforcement and large corporates; this indulged my love of research and gave me extensive experience with teaching diverse groups of adults. All the while I continued training dogs and horses and teaching animal-loving humans on the side. Oh and somewhere in there I also completed my Master's degree and had a baby!

Positively Together official!

Positively Together was officially born in January 2016, allowing me to share my passion on a larger scale. Since then, we have continued to expand and pivot and diversify and thrive. This is my life's work: helping people of all ages to understand, communicate with and bring out the best in their animals.

If any of this sounds interesting I would love to hear from you

Cheers,

Bex Tasker

P.S. I have some amazing humans and animals working alongside me, helping me to bring all these dreams to life. Click here to meet the team!
