Horse lessons at Positively Together are one-on-one. If you have 2 children that would like to share a lesson, we can accommodate that also. We teach beginner to intermediate riders or advanced riders wishing to explore liberty (i.e. our ponies do not do canter/jump lessons, so if this is a priority for you, you will want to look elsewhere). We are open to all ages, however weight limits apply for the wellbeing of our horses.
OUR FOCUS
Our focus (as with all our programs here at Positively Together) is on confidence building, and safe interactions with the horses where the animal enjoys it as much as the human does. This means that as well as all the usual skill building like haltering, tying up, grooming, saddling etc, kids also learn to read equine body language and make practical decisions to keep themselves and the horse safe and happy. Kids learn groundwork and training skills as well as riding skills.
HORSE WELFARE
We take horse welfare very seriously and take pride in our happy wiling horses! Students learn how to motivate the horse without using force or fear - we don't kick our horses in the ribs to make them go faster, or pull on their mouths to make them stop, and we never give whips to children. Our horses don't wear bits in their mouths, and we work hard to ensure beginner riders have balanced independent hands before they advance to trotting. The reins are connected directly to the horse's head, so it is important that they are not used for balance, but only for communication.
You will see our coaches actively training using food reinforcement with the horses during lessons, and we love to teach interested kids about clicker training and positive reinforcement.
Please note we have a weight limit for those wishing to ride (but those over the weight limit for riding are very welcome to sign up anyway and learn just how many amazing things there are to do with horses that don't include sitting on top of them!).
WHAT ABOUT THE WEATHER?
Lessons generally go ahead rain or shine, if it's awful weather we have miniature horses that can be brought inside for grooming, learning horsemanship, trick training, painting or any other variety of non-riding activities.
WILL THIS FIT MY CHILD'S NEEDS?
We are not certified in "equine therapy" but we do have many clients on the spectrum, or with anxiety disorders, dyspraxia etc. Our main riding pony and the two miniature horses are extremely safe and reliable, and suitable for very nervous or beginner riders. If this sounds like you, please go ahead and complete the form below and we can discuss whether the program is suitable.
HOW AND WHERE
We are on Wright Road, in Aongatete.
Riding lessons are sold in packages of 8 lessons per term for $678 (incl GST). Casual riding lessons ($90) are occasionally available, during school holidays. Cancellation policy is 24 hours notice, and any make-up sessions will be offered at end of term.
If you have your own pony and would like casual or regular lessons, reach out to Bex directly to enquire
